Dear Clint,
That there bald cypress, you
gave us, is losing its hair.
Moonlights bleeding on our pond
and your tree out crossways
rusted, like fish guts do
an old treble hook. Been tossin
my stink baits at it for near on
hours; so fars I reel in nothing.
Dead needles, things sorry and red
as steroid sores. Tuckered cypress,
hair falling out, that tree's still
dang pretty swell on the eyes;
edge of your bank, where channel
cats sink and we used to
drank, under this here
moonlight, pink like
it is.
Darn Cuz,
looks like we got us a nice night:
stars twink, heaven breathes not
a cloud, sky dark like a shiner,
black n' blue but she don't cry,
it be late, but summers grass
still grows like a cancer
under this swollen blood moon.
Might be worms would fare better,
cause these catfish here aint
biting no more, but thinking
I'm sure fine by that.
